Distressed Furniture Restoration

Distressed Furniture Restoration

Fall is nearly upon us! That means it is a perfect time to go through your attic and other storage space. Downsizing can be a great way to save space but it’s hard when you have family heirlooms and antiques that have seen better days. Even if your furniture is in bad condition, it doesn’t mean it’s beyond repair. In fact, you can have distressed antiques go through furniture repair or restoration to bring them back to their former beauty!

Distressed Furniture Restoration

Recently, Foxwood Restoration had the opportunity to give a new look to a 100-year-old, oak bedroom set! The furniture set had a beautiful design carved into the oak wood. Furthermore, the craftsmanship would allow the bedroom set to be used for generations to come with the proper care. All it needed was a little repair and restoration. When restoring antique wood pieces like this bedroom set, Foxwood strips and sands the wood to prepare it for staining.

The stripping process removes old paint, stains, and varnish that is too far gone and damaged to the point it cannot just be renewed. However, even after stripping the wood, stains can still remain. That is why sanding the wood becomes necessary. Sanding removes whatever remains of the brittle and damaged layer, allowing for new staining and treatment to be applied. Foxwood offers two different types of staining for customers to choose from. These are milk paint and tinted stains. Regardless of which option a customer chooses, they will fall in love with their antique furniture once again.

Full-Service Repair & Restoration

If you need a distressed furniture restoration or repair, then your first stop should be Foxwood Furniture Restorations. Painting or Staining Your Furniture

Aged Painting And Distressed Wood Finish

Painting or restaining your antique furniture can make your heirloom look good as new!

Nearly everyone has an antique piece of furniture or two. Something that was passed down through a family for generations. Regardless of how many generations it has been in the family, these antiques retain a sentimental value that is impossible to replace. So, when your sentimental items start to show their age, you want to improve their condition.

For wood furniture pieces, painting and staining are one of the best ways to revitalize your antiques.

When Should You Paint Your Furniture

First of all, you might be wondering what considerations to take when determining if you should paint or stain your antique furniture. If you want to give your furniture a fresh look, you probably consider a few factors. The quality of the antique should be taken into account before painting as painting or staining an antique diminishes the value of the piece. As a result, you might want to reconsider or possibly sell the furniture (depending on the sentimental and/or real value). You also should reconsider painting if your antique is made out of exotic woods like mahogany, cherry, or satinwood. These old woods should not be hidden behind paint or staining.

However, if your furniture is structurally sound but looks bad, a fresh coat of paint can bring it back to life! In addition, if you are not worried about maintaining value, painting can help blend your family heirloom with your current home decor. Antique furniture is supposed to be shared for generations to come, so why not?

Reupholstery for 3 Generation Family Couch

before couch reupholsteryDo you have a couch that needs to be reupholstered?

That is what one of our clients, Patty, needed for her antique couch. This couch had been Patty’s family for three generations. She recalls having many fond memories of sitting on the couch as a little girl. However, time had taken its toll on the furniture. The fabric was worn and lost its vibrant color. The couch’s seams are falling apart with the filling spilling out. The back cushion of the furniture was distorted. This family couch needed some special attention. Fortunately, Patty came to the right place! Foxwood Furniture Restorations was more than ready to restore this couch!

Getting New Material

This couch needed completely new upholstery due to the state of the fabric. Patty wanted the couch to feel and look similar to the original fabric. In order to restore this family heirloom, we directed our client to our upholstery fabric website. After Patty picked out six different samples, we sent the samples directly to her home. Our client chose the red fabric that felt similar to the couch’s original texture.

With the new material, Foxwood could finally get to work on restoring this sentimental heirloom!

Complete Couch Reupholstery

In order to breathe some life back into this couch, our team stripped the old material away so we could start the furniture reupholstery process! We put new filling to return the couch to its original shape. Afterward, we covered the entire piece with the new vibrant red material that Patty selected! We added a beaded tack strip to add an extra touch of class to the antique couch. Our specialists polished the wood to give the couch a new shine as well. Patty was very happy about the transformation of this family heirloom!

University of Michigan Conference Chair Reupholstery

Conference Chair ReupholsteryRecently, we reupholstered designer chairs used for years as conference seating at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. Owen, a client from Bloomfield Hills, asked us to reupholster these unique conference chairs and restore them to their former glory. These designer chairs circa 1960, were used by the university for many years and showed their age. However, with some new fabric and reupholstery, we were able to restore these chairs and add character to their new home!

Reupholstery Services in Bloomfield Hills

When our client from Bloomfield Hills brought in these unique chairs, we relished the challenge. Each conference chair was constructed in two parts, a smaller chair that composed the inner portion and a shell that composed the outer part, which fit together perfectly. These high-quality furniture pieces stood the test of time. The frame was intact and undamaged but the fabric showed its age through stains and discoloration. However, after many years of use, these conference chairs needed to be reupholstered.

Our client had a specific look in mind for the chairs. As such, we searched high and low for the right quality fabric to fit their vision. Even during their restoration, other customers entering Foxwood would stop and take pictures of the chairs due to their unique look.

The final result was stunning, as you can see. It’s hard to believe these chairs were once used at U of M as conference seating. The four comfortable chairs are situated around a fire pit in a room with high ceilings at our customer’s home. They were lovingly repurposed by Foxwood. We are proud of the work of our craftsmen that made this restoration project successful.Conference chair restoration
