Antique Hoosier Restoration

Antique Hoosier Restoration
After

Dan of Canton Michigan inherited this antique Hoosier from his Grandmother who lived to be 108 years old. The Hoosier was dropped off in a truckload of pieces as the Antique Hoosier restoration had not been in operation for about 50 years. Also, the owner did not know if it would even go back together. He said please just do the best you can as this cabinet is very sentimental to me.

The Hoosier was painted with 100 years of old paint. Also, he asked Foxwood Restorations to strip it repair the structure and paint it with old-world blue paint and then add some antique aging to it. See the picture of the unit stripped and broken down. He also asked us to research the history of the Hoosier cabinet. Most homes in the late 1800s rarely had built-in cabinetry. As families began to grow a movement started to set forth an “efficiency Kitchen” that would make it easier to manage the kitchen “stuff”.

The new invention was a well-organized, compact cabinet that provided a place for everything ranging from salt shakers to mixing bows and also a handful of key tools like a built-in flour sifter. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that bring the cost joy. In our modern age of LED outdoor Christmas decorations and online buying sometimes it can be hard to remember just how simple Christmas was for generations of people in the past.

What Makes a Piece of Furniture Valuable

What Makes a Piece of Furniture Valuable

What makes a piece of furniture valuable? Recently, Foxwood restored a beautiful Italian heirloom family couch at our Ann Arbor location. While furniture can depreciate over time, its value can vary depending on various factors. So, what makes furniture valuable?

Generational Furniture Value

Age tends to depreciate the value of items. Most of the time, this applies to furniture. However, there are some exceptions. As a rule of thumb, any piece of furniture that passes through two generations in fair condition starts increasing in value. What defines a generation? For Foxwood, a generation is loosely defined as 20 to 25 years. So, if a piece of furniture was made in the seventies or eighties, it started increasing in value in 2020!  This value is also because furniture from that time period is of better quality than anything made today.

High Quality and Other Factors

It might be hard to believe, but most furniture today is not made to a high standard. At least, not compared to a piece of furniture made 20 years ago. In fact, furniture made over 20 years ago is far superior to the furniture that you can find in the store today. Furniture can have tremendous value based on its materials, age, and creator. Furthermore, value can vary depending on the quantity and availability of a piece. Just like supply and demand, if there is less available then it’s going to be more valuable. It is also important to know that retail value does not translate as auction value. So, what makes a piece of furniture valuable is reliant on many factors. However, without a doubt, any piece of furniture over 20 years old is worth restoring!

How Reviews Help Small Businesses

How Reviews Help Small Businesses

Do you know how reviews help small businesses? Most of the time, people do not take the time to review a business. The people who tend to review are passionate about the service, regardless if it was good or bad. However, people underestimate the power of online reviews. After all, these reviews can make or break a business!

Power of A Review

A review provides potential customers insight into a business through someone’s firsthand experience. But how important are these reviews to shoppers? According to The Importance of Online Customer Reviews, 90% of customers read online reviews before visiting a business. A good portion of these people trusts online reviews at the same level as a personal recommendation. However, the effects of these reviews are immense. For example, customers are likely to spend 31% more if a business has “excellent” reviews. Furthermore, 72% of customers are more likely to trust a local business with positive reviews.

However, negative reviews have the same power. If a business has one negative review, it can cause the business to lose 30 potential customers. Furthermore, 86% of customers will hesitate to buy or get a service from a store with negative online reviews. As a result, reviews can be very powerful. Reviews provide “word-of-mouth” referrals that can help your local businesses. But where can you leave a review?

Where to Leave Reviews

So, where can you leave a review for your favorite small business? While leaving a review is essential, where you post the reviews is also important. You want people to be able to read about your experience and opinion. Here are a few places where you should be posting your review:

These are the best places to put your review to help your favorite small, local business like Foxwood Restorations.

The Art of the Ottoman

The Art of the Ottoman

Ottoman History

For August, Foxwood Restorations is highlighting the ottoman. For many, the ottoman has provided people with a fashionable form of seating dating back to the late 1820s. When it first debuted, it was originally made up of a simple upholstered box with a few loose cushions and a back. Also, the original version of this furniture had four seats arranged around a central box or two seats arranged back to back. After 1850, a new more complete version of ottomans was introduced that was modeled after a French gossip seat with the sitters facing each other.

Ottomans were not found everywhere. If you wanted to see an ottoman you would be most likely to find one in ballrooms, galleries, and other large spaces. In these settings, people were expected to only use them for a brief second and not lounge in them. Today, this piece of furniture is a regular staple in most homes.

Tabletop Tips from Foxwood Restoration

Tabletops bring a lot of character to a person’s home. With that being said, there are a few things that you can do to protect the value and look of your furniture. Foxwood Restorations a local expert in furniture repair and restoration would like to share these valuable tabletop tips!

Tabletop – Removing an Alcohol Spot

Removing an alcohol spot is quite simple. If you’re fast enough after the spill, try to very lightly wipe the spot with a cloth, moistened with a little household ammonia. Also, if this method doesn’t work, try rubbing the alcohol spot with a fine abrasive or some type of lubricant.

Lubricating Runners

Lubricate the runners with a silicone sprayer. Use a piece of paraffin wax or a wax candle to apply a thin layer of wax to the sliding surfaces of the runners. Once that’s completed, slide the top together a few times to spread the wax along the runners.

Cleaning Wood Runners

Extension tables become difficult to open when runners are clogged with dirt and lubricant. To avoid this difficulty:Tabletop Tips from Foxwood Restoration

  • Spread the top apart as far as you can to allow access to the runners
  • Use the tip of a small screwdriver to dig out dirt and caked lubricant from the runners
  • Use a cloth, soaked with mineral spirits (or turpentine) and an old toothbrush to scrub away any remaining dirt or grease
  • Wipe the runners dry with a clean cloth

Re-gluing Veneer

Place a dishtowel over the blister and press down with an iron set on moderate heat, to protect the finish. After a few minutes, the blister should flatten. Once the blister has flattened, weigh it down with several heavy books overnight.

Treating White Rings or Spots on your Tabletop

White rings can be caused by condensation from a cold drink, alcohol, spilled shaving lotion/perfume, or even by a hot cup of coffee. To remove a white ring or spot, try placing a blotter over the spot and pressing with a warm iron. If this method doesn’t work after a couple of tries, you’ll have to rub the spot with a fine abrasive and some type of lubricant.

If you have any further questions regarding tabletop repair and maintenance please do not hesitate to contact us.  Finally, if you need an expert that is local and does professional furniture restoration, we would love to be of service to you!
